Availability: Transportation Research Board Business Office 500 Fifth Street, NW Abstract: Frictional characteristics of pavement surfaces measured using different equipment have been correlated with each other. However, as of now, the skid numbers (SN) measured by the Locked Wheel Skid Trailer (LWST) have not been correlated with friction numbers measured using the Dynamic Friction Tester (DFT). Moreover, there is a desire to be able to predict the LWST measured skid numbers in terms of the properties measured by DFT and the Circular Texture Meter (CTM). With the desire by the international community to advance the use of the International Friction Index (IFI), there is also a compelling impetus to develop a predictive equation for the LWST measured skid numbers in terms of the IFI parameters (i.e., F60 and Sp). Four existing pavement sections were identified for measuring both friction and texture properties. In this study, skid trailer system, DFT, and CTM were used to assess the pavement surface characteristics. The obtained results were analyzed statistically using regression analysis. Analysis variables included the skid number at 64 km/hr measured using the ASTM E 274, the friction number at 64 km/hr measured using ASTM E 1911, the mean profile depth measured using ASTM E 2157, and the International Friction Index parameters based on ASTM E 1960. Analysis results show that there is a significant linear correlation between LWST values and DFT values and the calibrated wet friction parameter (F60). Predictive equations for LWST measured skid numbers are developed based on, either DFT and CTM measured values, or IFI parameters.
