Abstract:

In this paper, a cellular automata (CA) model with finer time-space resolution is proposed to suit applications in the emerging Inter Vehicle Communication (IVC) area. Tuning the step and cell sizes used in the original CA model is necessary to achieve finer-grained control of vehicle speeds. However, we show that this leads to unrealistic flow capacities, lane changing behavior and acceleration rates. We propose a finer time-space resolution CA model (fCA) that fixes these problems with the introduction of reaction time, dummy vehicles, driver aggressiveness and a new acceleration scheme. Our simulation results with a ring road indicate that the fCA model indeed eliminated the aforementioned problems.
