Abstract:

The weight of trucks in China is as high as 300,000 pounds. In 2004 the first perpetual pavement experimental road in China was designed to carry these ultra-high loads and in 2005 the sections were constructed. Quality control was important to ensure that the constructed materials would perform as designed. This paper documents the design and construction of the subgrade layers, the hot mix layers and properties of the aggregates and asphalt binder used. It also documents construction processes used for the different layers of HMA. Results of the field quality control show the properties were well controlled. Engineering properties of the HMA were enhanced by the high degree of density achieved in the field.
