Abstract:

The May 2007 publication of Transit Cooperative Research Program Research Results Digest 84 and companion technical appendices available on the web provides researchers and practitioners with the results of a study of use of wayside and on-board audible devices to warn pedestrians of the approach of light rail vehicles at light rail transit grade crossings. The scope of the project included a literature search and summary of relevant findings, analysis of accident data on pedestrian collisions, a summary of interviews of light rail transit operators, and development and testing of an alternative audible device which utilized a unique “ascending stair step” audible sound. The primary product of this effort is the guidebook presented in the digest.
