Abstract:

As transportation surveillance technology continues to improve, the measurement of more complete information is becoming increasingly feasible. The Danish Road Directorate initiated in 2002 a comprehensive study of equipment using inductive signatures as input for classification into 10 vehicle categories such as passenger car, van, truck, and bus with the objectives to assess performance on existing Danish inductive dual-loops. Preliminary tests showed encouraging results and lead in 2004 to field trials of detectors from Golden River Traffic Ltd, England, Traffic Data Systems GmbH, Germany, and Aanderaa Data Instruments AS, Norway on a rural two lane road between Odense and Svendborg (Route 9), and at an urban two lane road in Copenhagen (Christians Brygge). Traffic were measured by dual-loop detectors, vehicles classified and validated using video truth data. The article presents results from the evaluation of the field tests differentiated by vehicle category, detector type, road type and loop size. Based on the promising performance it was concluded to implement automatic vehicle classifiers on roads in Denmark and use results from the study as accuracy guidelines.
