Abstract:

The existing models including the empirical and mechanistic models are analyzed, and it is indicated that they can not describe the three phases’ permanent deformation of asphalt mixture under repeated load. So, a new model is required to be developed. Burgers model is selected and the dashpot of series-wound dashpot is modified based on the change regularity of permanent strain rate. The new model considered as the combination of modified dashpot and Van Der Poel model is derived from the rheological and viscoelastic theory. Subsequently, the asphalt mixture called AC16 in china is selected, and triaxial repeated load permanent deformation tests are conducted to validate the modified model. The test is performed at the temperature of 50ºC and 60ºC, and the procedure uses a loading cycle of 1.0 second in duration, and consisting of applying 0.1-second haversine load followed by 0.9-second rest period. The peak values of haversine load are 700kpa, 800kpa, 1000kpa separately, and confining pressure is 138Kpa. Parameters of the modified model are obtained by a nonlinear regression analysis of the test data, and then permanent strains and the flowing number of each mixture are calculated by the modified model. The theoretical values are compared with the actual, and it proves that the modified model can well describe the three phases’ permanent deformation of asphalt mixture under repeated load.
