Title: Web-Based, Interactive Temporal-Spatial Traffic and Incident Data Visualization Tool

The few systems in existence that do display temporal and spatial data together generate static, cumbersome displays with little interaction. The University of Maryland’s Web-based, Interactive, Temporal-Spatial Traffic and Incident Data Visualization Tool allows users to combine both time-based and spatial traffic and incident data to generate a three dimensional, interactive graph that more accurately represents traffic conditions. This tool enables users to view the desired measurements (speed, volume, occupancy, flow, incident location, incident number, or other transportation data types) over a chosen distance and time period. The user is able to quickly and easily manipulate the three dimensional graphs to gain a better understanding of traffic conditions. The user may customize coloring schemes and data bins, zoom level, and orientation in space. The three dimensional graph is also transformable into a flattened, two dimensional graph utilizing color to representing the z-axis. This web-based tool shows substantial promise for enabling the rapid detection of trends and problems in transportation systems.
