The Board on Children, Youth, and Families of the National Research Council, in collaboration with the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies, pursued an initiative to examine the research within a broad interdisciplinary forum. From this internal consultation a proposal for a national workshop emerged. This workshop brought together safety experts with others from a broad array of disciplines. The workshop was held at the National Academies, in Washington, DC, May 2006. This report summarizes the committee's assessment of what transpired at the workshop and highlights some of the views expressed by workshop speakers or participants. Chapter headings for the report are as follows; 1. Introduction - A Critical Health Problem; 2. The Anatomy of Crashes Involving Young Drivers; 3. Characteristics of Adolescents That Can Affect Driving; 4. Strategies to Improve Safety; 5. Moving Forward.
