Abstract:

Permanent deformation is one of the most important types of load-associated distresses occurring in flexible pavement systems. The permanent deformation models, used to predict the rut depth of the asphalt layer, usually relate the plastic strains to the number of load repetitions. Plastic strain can be measured using laboratory repeated load permanent deformation tests. On the other hand, an empirical model that relates the number of traffic applications and other mixture properties can be developed to calculate the plastic strains for different conditions based on the analysis of the testing data. This research involved the summary and analysis of repeated load permanent deformation testing data for AC mixtures from different projects at the University of Maryland and at Arizona State University over the past 15 years. A comprehensive database was developed and carefully examined for accuracy of data input. This database was used to develop regression models to predict the permanent strains produced in the asphalt mixtures at different load repetitions. Different models were evaluated and studied under this research work. A model was selected from these models. The selected model included independent variables such as the resilient strain, number of cycles, aggregate gradations, stress state, binder shear modulus and a volumetric property. The model had a coefficient of correlation (R2) of 78%. The model included mixture and binder properties that are known to be important in the permanent deformation prediction.
