Availability: Transportation Research Board Business Office 500 Fifth Street, NW Abstract: Self Consolidating Concrete (SCC) is a recent advancement in the concrete industry. SCC is a type of concrete that can be placed without consolidation and is beginning to be widely accepted in the United States. However, there have been concerns regarding the transfer length with SCC girders. Few studies have been conducted to evaluate the factors that significantly influence the transfer length when SCC is used. The primary objectives of the research program reported herein is to investigate the transfer length for prestressed beams cast with SCC and compare those results with the calculated transfer lengths that are predicted by the ACI and AASHTO transfer length equations. The research program consists of casting 6 fully bonded prestressed beams and measuring transfer lengths after release during different stages. One SCC mixture was used to cast the 6 beams. Each beam is 6.5 inches wide and contains two 0.60 inch diameter prestressing strands. The beams also measure 18 feet in length with a height of 12 inches. Transfer lengths were measured by using Demec points. Test results indicate that the ACI/AASHTO Equation to calculate transfer lengths conservatively applies to prestressed SCC beams.
