Abstract:

Many factors such as suitable four-season weather conditions and favorable economic and institutional infrastructure together with available industrial capacity in a number of Asian developing countries are conducive to motorcycle ownership and its use. Our interest in this study is on one of these metropolitan areas, Jabotabek metropolitan area in Indonesia. Using both person-trip data and land use data, inferences are made on motorcycle ownership and it use in Jabotabek. The results indicate that socio-economic and demographic characteristics are effective on both motorcycle ownership and its use; no land use variable is found to be effective on motorcycle ownership. Locational factors such as residing in DKI Jakarta and spatial separation from DKI Jakarta, i.e., distance from city center, have negative effects on motorcycle ownership and its use. Land use variables, ratio of commercial land use as well as ratio of undeveloped land and land diversity are found to decrease motorcycle use. Similarly, public transport supply (bus transit) decreases motorcycle use.
