Availability: Transportation Research Board Business Office 500 Fifth Street, NW Abstract: A number of the world's public transportation systems have implemented smart cards fare payment system, which could be expanded to retail purchase and other services. This expansion would flourish a number of service application that would benefit not only transits but also local service providers. The goal of this paper is not to show complete and definitive results but to demonstrate sample application that would stimulate the demand for both transportation and purchase. A basic model is formulated, sample service application is derived and tested to a group of monitors. Findings include lessons learned through this field experiment which would be valuable for implementation.
