To do so, we use travel diary survey data along with GIS land use data and individual attitudes on urban and transportation issues. It is found that long-term mobility decisions such as vehicle ownership (private car or motorbike) and commute trip mode are solely affected by socio-economic and demographic characteristics of households or individuals. When the analyses are conducted with respect to short-term mobility decisions (trip-making behavior), land use and transportation system variables turn out to be significantly effective. As a further step, it is concluded that land use and transportation system policies to change short term travel behavior might be strategically effective; on the other hand, they will be mostly ineffective if directed at changing long-term travel behavior.
