The itinerary planning problem provides the essential information offered by the on-line trip planning and guidance services. The specification of the itinerary for performing an urban or interurban trip, involves a routing and scheduling problem in a multimodal transportation network that includes the following features: i) multiple criteria for selecting the most preferable itinerary, ii) visit of a given set of stops in a specified sequence, and iii) strict time windows on the origin, the destination and the intermediate stops. The objective of this paper is to present a new formulation and algorithmic solution for the trip planning problem that takes into account the aforementioned features. The algorithmic approach proposed is based on the decomposition of the problem to sequence of simple itinerary (i.e. without intermediate stops) sub-problems. A new algorithm is proposed for solving the simple itinerary planning problem based on the backward dynamic programming technique. The paper provides a discussion on the computational complexity of the problem and elaborates the steps of the new algorithm on an illustrative example. Preliminary results on the computational performance of the proposed algorithm indicated acceptable time and memory requirements. In this context the proposed algorithm has been integrated in an on-line advanced public transport information system for supporting urban and interurban trip planning decisions.
