Abstract:

The Individualized Marketing Demonstration Program (IMDP) of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) was implemented by Socialdata during the period of 2003 – 2006. It was implemented as a National Demonstration Project with the aim of promoting walking, cycling and public transportation. The use of environmentally friendly modes should be increased by encouraging people to voluntarily change their travel behavior. These changes have been implemented with a minimal need for new capital investments, all the while maintaining people’s mobility. Thus far, the concept has proven successful in Europe and Australia and has shown promising results in Portland, Oregon. Already 250 projects with around 3 million participants have been implemented. With the idea that similar results can be obtained throughout the country, the FTA has invested federal resources in a partnership with transit agencies in four competitively selected pilot communities in the U.S. The project is a follow up of the UITP project “Switching to Public Transport” which was implemented with 45 successful projects in 13 European nations. However the Individualized Marketing Demonstration Program is not limited to public transport, it targets all environmentally friendly modes. A high number of cities showed great interest in participating in the project. From a total of 66 different cities submitting applications from 33 different states, as well as the District of Columbia 4 cities were selected for project implementation.
