Abstract:

Fatigue cracking resistance plays a major role in the behavior of bituminous mixes in asphalt pavements. However, there is no appropriate procedure to assess this property in the laboratory since different failure criteria have been proposed. In the research conducted at the Road Research Laboratory of the Technical University of Catalonia, Spain, three types of test have been employed: the Barcelona Tracción Directa (BTD) test procedure, the three-point bending beam test according to the Spanish standard, and finally the direct tensile test, which was recently implemented in this laboratory. The results of this study reveal that fatigue cracking of mixtures occurs when a certain strain level is reached, here named fatigue critical strain, independently of test type, temperature and applied stress.
