Abstract:

This paper demonstrates the potential motorcycles can make in implementing a sustainable transport strategy in a major urban city. It focuses on London, a city where the majority of passenger journeys are made by modes other than by car. It also demonstrates that motorcycles are a positive transport choice for some individuals responding to congestion, be it congestion on the highway or congestion on public transport. In terms of land-take for parking, motorcycles offer greater efficiency gains. At a time when road user charging is being proposed as the new panacea for solving urban transport problems, the author argues that the solution is to think small.
