In order to explore the structural properties of UTW in China, a large full-scale trial road was constructed in 2002. The trial road was divided into shorter sections with different structural layer depths, different concrete panel dimensions and different materials. The sections were evaluated under a Linear-track Accelerated Loading Facility in the research. The strain data collected in dynamic and static loading tests were analyzed to evaluate the performances and characteristics of different sections. In the test, it was found that when there was a good bonding in section between UTW and the underlying asphalt layer, the tensile strains were small at both the surface and the bottom of the panel. During the period of heavier loading and rain erosion, failures were observed in the UTW in some sections. By comparing the deteriorations in all the sections, the preferable structural combination was determined. According to good performance of section 3 and section 4, the well-designed UTW is believed applicable to heavy or medium traffic. After loading test, a certain number of samples were cored at specified locations. The interface bonding conditions and UTW failure patterns were revealed. At the end of this paper, a three-dimensional Finite Element model was developed by using ANSYS program and the distress locations of the panels were analyzed.
