Abstract:

With widely deployed sensor networks deployed in the transportation system, traffic management centers are capable of monitoring roadway traffic conditions in great detail. However, knowing what is happening does not provide insight into what will happen for strategies that a TMC is about to implement. The development of traffic estimation and prediction (TrEP) programs including DynaSMART and DynaMIT holds the potential to such needs. So far, these TrEP programs have shown favorable evaluation results under either laboratory environments or off-line. However, it is expected that many challenges would be encountered when the TrEP programs are being implemented online in real time. These include integration of real-time sensors and network conditions, computation time, consideration of sensor data quality, etc. This paper presents a pilot study of conducting an online implementation of DynaMIT, one of the TrEP programs, in Hampton Roads, VA. Initially, DynaMIT’s supply parameters and demand were calibrated and then the performance of DynaMIT was evaluated through the online implementation of DynaMIT. Based on the online implementation of DynaMIT for approximately three days, it was found that DynaMIT showed fairly good performance on the estimation and prediction of the traffic sensor counts with the root mean square normalized (RMSN) error ranges between 0.15 and 0.25 for estimations, and 0.25 and 0.4 for predictions. Even though speed and travel times showed some discrepancies, further investigation indicated that the performance of DynaMIT can be improved with adequately calibrated supply parameters.
