Abstract:

This paper presents car drivers’ preferences for alternative fuels, based on choices observed in a small-scale stated choice experiment. Respondents were requested to choose between a hypothetical alternative fuel vehicle that varied in seven attributes and a comparable petrol-fuel car. The model estimated from these observations indicated that all utility changes were in expected directions, which gives face validity to the model. The results suggest that especially the fuel price, the availability of alternative fuel, measured as the detour to reach a refueling station, and the range of the vehicle most heavily determined the car drivers’ purchase behavior. The model is illustrated by predicting car drivers’ choices for hydrogen-fueled vehicles, under simplified scenarios.
