Abstract:

Recent studies on the effect of certain alkali-acetate and alkali-formate based airfield deicers on durability of concrete have strongly suggested that these deicers are capable of triggering deleterious levels of expansion due to Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) in concretes containing marginal aggregates. Based on these findings, an investigation into the effectiveness of supplementary cementing materials (SCMs) and lithium compounds in mitigating the ASR induced by the deicers was initiated. This paper presents the results and analysis from a research study conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of selected mitigation measures (fly ash and slag) for reducing the potential of alkali-silica reactivity in presence of potassium acetate based deicer. Three different fly ashes with substantially different lime contents – low-lime fly ash (Class F), intermediate-lime fly ash (Class F), and high-lime fly ash (Class C), and a Grade 120 slag were evaluated. Results from these studies indicate that the lime content of the fly ash plays an important role in the observed mitigation. In general, low-lime and intermediate-lime fly ashes at 25% replacement of cement appear to provide adequate mitigation with three out of the four aggregates evaluated. However, high-lime fly ash at a 25% cement replacement level, and slag at a 40% cement replacement level, did not provide any significant mitigation with any of the aggregates evaluated.
