Hit by the enormous economic crisis in 1997 -commonly known in Indonesia as krismon, Jakarta attempts to remain a livable city for its residents. The use of motorcycles become much more popular than other transportation modes. The number of motorcycles increased dramatically since 2000. This paper discusses the use of motorcycles in light of rapid urbanization and heavily dependent peripheral areas on the central city in Jakarta. What factors contribute to the high use of motorcycles and the distinctive characteristics of motorcyclists in Jakarta are identified. The use of motorcycles can be perceived as the “solution” to the urbanization, suburbanization and krismon faced by Jakarta. Some problems were found in the use of motorcycles including traffic violations and accident exposures. This will be the next challenge for urban transportation in Jakarta.
