Abstract:

This study investigates the household behavior on car and motorcycle ownership in Asian metropolitan cities of Nagoya, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and Manila. The household attitudes and behaviors on vehicle ownership are modeled using bivariate ordered probit (BOP) models. The accessibility is generally known to be correlated with vehicle ownership decisions. Accordingly, the accessibility is incorporated as an input for the proposed vehicle ownership model to explore the potential relationship among them. The mode choice models for the cities concerned were initially developed to quantify the accessibility variables that were later integrated into the vehicle ownership models. Inter-temporal and inter-regional comparison, and temporal and spatial transferability analysis have brought insights into the vehicle ownership modeling.
