Abstract:

Pavement structure property information, including the thickness and material properties of each layer comprising the pavement structure and the history of conduction activities of each pavement layer, is vital for determining appropriate pavement preservation strategies, pavement design performance validation, and pavement performance forecasting. However, there is no adequate system designed to integrate detailed pavement structure profile information with a Pavement Management System (PMS). To address this need, Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has sponsored Georgia Tech to develop an integrated pavement structure profile information system after the successful development and implementation of a PMS. This system includes two programs: Sectionlog and Samplog. Sectionlog is to store and manage the historical pavement construction data using a block-based model in a 2D (x-z) space and time domain. This program can compute the homogeneous pavement blocks to reconstruct and display the historical pavement structural profiles generated based on the original construction data and the subsequent rehabilitation history. Samplog is to store and manage the actual pavement sample coring data. With the actual pavement structure profile, it can complement and validate the pavement profile information. Both programs were designed using the GDOT common linear reference system (LRS) to seamlessly integrate the pavement structure profile data with other systems and data sources, such as GPAM, GIS data, and traffic volume. The Samplog program has been successfully implemented by GDOT, and the development of Sectionlog is completed and under evaluation. This paper presents this integrated pavement structure profile information system.
