Title: Safety Performance Functions at Midblock for Bicycle Facilities
Accession Number: 01029470
Record Type: Component
Availability: Transportation Research Board Business Office 500 Fifth Street, NW Abstract: This study develops safety performance functions to relate the mean accident frequency at bicycle facilities to facility type and prevailing traffic traits. The number of accidents per year and per roadway mile conveys the accident frequency. Facility type varies from shoulder to bicycle and shared lanes. The study further assesses the variations in performance functions inherent to specific facility design types within ranges of the predictor variables. These variations lead to the guidelines for bicycle facility selection based on safety maximization. The calibration data for the study was provided in ArcGIS format by the Florida Department of Transportation, District IV. A generalized linear regression model predicts the accident frequency and confirms the acceptability of the earlier stated variables as predictors of accident frequency. Shoulder lanes consistently outperform other facilities. Shared lanes fare the worst.
