Abstract:

This paper examines user benefits from traveler information services by assessing travel time savings from a traveler information website. Travel times are estimated for two theoretical commuters traveling from Bellevue to Seattle across one of two bridges that cross Lake Washington. One commuter, ignorant of traffic conditions, habitually takes the same route, while the other commuter takes the route with the shortest predicted travel time as displayed on the Washington State Department of Transportation traffic website. The analysis reveals travel time savings from checking the website as great as 26 minutes during the peak periods. However, the average savings rarely exceed one minute for any period during the day and occasionally result in worse travel times.
