Abstract:

The AVV Transport Research Centre of the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management asked TNO to carry out a literature scan of quantitative results available on the effects of Advanced Driver Assistance (ADA) Systems. These results were compared with the (predominantly qualitative) results of an international workshop, “Expert Workshop on effects of ADA systems on safety, throughput and comfort” within the ADASE 2 project. This analysis revealed that most of the expert opinions are supported by the literature findings. It also made clear that there is a lack of empirical data and knowledge regarding user acceptance and behavior, to be gathered from Field Operational Tests for instance. Therefore a Field Operational Test with a fleet of cars equipped with both Advanced Cruise Control and Lane Departure Warning systems is currently carried out in the Netherlands.
