Availability: Transportation Research Board Business Office 500 Fifth Street, NW Abstract: A ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey was conducted on a 7-mile section of I-71 in Ohio to investigate a suspected under-drain problem associated with premature pavement damage. The survey was carried out in both a ½-mile closure zone requiring immediate repair because of rutting, as well as along the remaining length of the section. The objective of the GPR survey was to assess the location and extent of the drainage problem throughout the project length. The GPR survey consisted of longitudinal data collection above and at varying offsets from the drain alignment, and transverse data collection at a set of locations, both within and outside of the closure zone. The longitudinal GPR data was analyzed to determine the variation in moisture content in the pavement base along the 7-mile section. The transverse survey provided information on the lateral offset of the drains. The GPR survey was supplemented by geotechnical sampling and laboratory testing at the transverse GPR data collection points within the closure area, and by observations made during the controlled excavation and repair process carried out by the contractor. The GPR survey confirmed the relationship between the offset of the under-drain and the clogging, and developed data indicating the potential for detrimental pavement distress was likely confined to the closure area.
