Abstract:

The production of construction waste has been dramatically increased, and social and environmental pressures draw greater significance on the recycling of the waste. Waste concrete is particularly crucial among the construction wastes. The technology to recycle the waste concrete has been improved, and hence this study aims to evaluate the fundamental characteristics of concrete using recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) for structural concrete members, such as pavement structures. The concrete evaluated in this study contained various amount of fine RCA with 100% of coarse RCA. Compressive strength gradually decreases as the amount of the fine RCA increases. At the replacement ratio of 100% for both the coarse and fine RCA, the strength decreases by 15.5% at 28 days. The strength reduction becomes more significant when the fine RCA ratio is over 60%. The chloride ion penetrability is shown to be moderate up to the fine RCA ratio of 60%. The carbonation resistance is shown to be good enough and drying shrinkage of the concrete using RCA is very comparable to the estimation suggested by ACI 209. Dynamic modulus of elasticity decreases as greater amount of RCA is incorporated, and is smaller than the literature. Even though it is anticipated that the recycled aggregate concrete can be successfully applied to structural concrete members, it is suggested that the fine RCA should not be replaced by more than 60% when the coarse RCA ratio is 100% due to strength development and chloride ion penetrability rather than other properties investigated herein.
