Abstract:

This paper describes how a sonic boom simulator is a vital component of the design process for a supersonic aircraft. The sonic boom can provide the design team with an audible, relative comparison of one sonic boom signature to another and contribute towards the realization of acceptable supersonic flight over land. A simple simulation system of this type is not meant to eliminate the need for a supersonic demonstration aircraft but to supplement its development. This paper discusses sonic boom simulation by using conventional audio equipment. The frequency response characteristics of such a system pose a challenge when attempting to simulate pressure waveforms such as a sonic boom signature. There are low and high frequency response limitations of the audio equipment as well as waveform distortions that are introduced when a signal is passed through the system. It is possible to filter a full-fidelity waveform and preserve much of its audible content yet still possess a signal that is within the performance capabilities of the system. Also, if the input signal is prefiltered with an estimate of the inverse system response it would be possible to minimize the waveform distortion. Time-domain digital signal processing techniques will accomplish these tasks and the results of a compensated system will also be discussed in the paper.
