Abstract:

When most people hear the term “traffic calming”, they often associate it with speed humps. Many people only think of speed humps and never relate other traffic calming to other techniques such as center islands and traffic circles. The main reason for this type of thinking is speed humps are the most widely used traffic calming device. Speed humps are generally employed as the first and only traffic calming strategy in several municipalities, but there are many other strategies in use around the country. This document provides information on selected traffic calming programs and processes currently in place in the United States. The purpose is to provide a national perspective and analysis of the existing and planned traffic calming policies, practices, similarities, and differences. This document pays close attention to the questions, what are the most commonly used traffic calming policy procedures, and what lessons have been learned from the implementation of traffic calming.
