Title: U.S. DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION REMOTE-SENSING PROGRAM AND OTHER AGENCY PROGRAMS
Accession Number: 00822628
Record Type: Component
Abstract: This conference presentation describes the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT's) Commercial Remote-Sensing Application to Transportation Program. The program is organized around three goals: demonstrating potential remote-sensing applications for achieving a "better, cheaper, and smarter" transportation system for the 21st Century; establishing and maintaining partnerships with academia, service providers, industries, and users to conduct research and to move applications into practice; and professional workforce development. The U.S. DOT held forums from which emerged four priority areas: Traffic Surveillance, Monitoring, and Management; Environmental Assessment, Integration, and Streamlining; Transportation Infrastructure Management; and Disaster Assessment, Safety, and Hazards. These four topics are being addressed by consortia who are looking at short-term applications of remote-sensing products and services to transportation, innovative longer-term research to match remote sensing to critical transportation problems, and workforce development.
