Title: TRAFFIC SAFETY VS ACCESS MANAGEMENT
Accession Number: 00936777
Record Type: Component
Availability: Transportation Research Board Business Office 500 Fifth Street, NW Abstract: In June 1993, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District IV Office which comprises of Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River Counties assigned roadway classifications for the purposes of access management to all state maintained roadways. Although one of the primary intents behind access classification was to protect public safety, the accident history along these corridors was only one of fourteen (14) criteria used to assign the access classification. The fourteen (14) Qualitative and Quantitative criteria used in the access classification include: Qualitative - 1. Existing and future functional classification, 2. Presence of planned improvements, 3. Development density, 4. Type of Drainage/edge treatment, 5. Existing and future land uses, 6. Local street network/frontage roads, 7. Potential for access restriction/new median; Quantitative - 8. Number of through lanes, 9. Posted Speed limit, 10. Existing and future traffic volumes, 11. Accident history, 12. Driveway density, 13. Median opening density, and 14. Signal spacing. The primary purpose behind this study is to compare the accident statistics between different classes of roadways to test the significance of difference in accident experience.
