Abstract:
The Newark-Elizabeth Rail Link Minimum Operable Segment-1 is a 1.6-km (1-mi) extension of the existing Newark City Subway light rail system from Newark Penn Station to the New Jersey Transit Corporation historic Broad Street commuter rail station. The alignment is underground and at-grade, adjacent to historic buildings, commercial developments, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, and the Riverfront Stadium, home of the Newark Bears baseball team. The final design, which began in late 1998 and will continue through 2001, is being performed for NJ Transit by a joint venture of BRW, Inc., and Parsons Brinckerhoff. It requires close coordination with the city of Newark, adjacent property owners, and the New Jersey Department of Transportation, which is relocating a roadway to accommodate the trackway. Described is the project history, alignment, stations, systems, operations, and project schedule. Problems encountered during the final design and how they are being solved are detailed.
