Abstract:
The Port Authority of Allegheny County, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is in the process of expanding its popular Stage I light rail system. The Stage II program will encompass additional revenue track miles as well as a number of upgrades over the existing operational tracks. There will be new construction along the Overbrook right-of-way, which had accommodated President's Conference Committee cars and service but has been closed since 1993. Upgrades to the existing light rail system include reconstructing portions of the Library line, procurement of new rail cars and rehabilitation of existing rail cars systems equipment upgrades, a new fare collection system, and a new operations control center facility and system. The State II program and its progress to date are described, with emphasis on the more unique aspects of the program. Stage II construction began in early 1999 and will continue through 2003.
