Abstract: Production, transportation, and use of hazardous materials (hazmat) are essential to the economy of the United States with its technology dependent society, while safe transportation practices are influenced by the increased harmonization and rationalization of regulations, better data, new technology, and cooperative efforts between shippers and carriers. This paper summarizes some of the key issues and the progress expected in hazmat transportation.
