Abstract: This paper examines the role Hot-mix asphalt (HMA) plays in the U.S. transportation system, and will continue to do. The specifics covered include: the state of the art of and future prospects for HMA in a number of key areas, such as the role of the user agency or owner, materials, processing, transportation, lay-down procedures, testing for quality and performance, work zone safety and traffic control and training.
