Abstract: The Transportation Research Board Committee on Pavement Maintenance is concerned with causes of deterioration of the surface and subsurface of degraded or slippery pavements and shoulders as well as preventive and corrective measures to improve such conditions. This paper provides an overview of the Committee's assessment of the state of the art and practice in pavement maintenance at the beginning of the 21st century. Treatment types, treatment selection, materials selection, application procedures, specifications, and treatment performance include some of the specific topics covered.
