Abstract:

This digest summarizes the findings of an international technology scanning review conducted with the support of National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Project 20-36, "Highway Research and Technology--International Information Sharing." The scanning review team consisted of representatives from U.S. federal and state agencies as well as the private sector. The review included visits to highway research institutes, hydraulic research laboratories, and field sites in Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Although the review concentrated on bridge scour and stream instability countermeasures, the scanning review team members' inquiries were wide-ranging and included basic scour technology for evaluation and design, laboratory and field research programs, environmental issues, and bioengineering techniques.
