Abstract:

Paving fabrics are a special class of geosynthetic that provide the generally acknowledged functions of a stress-absorbing interlayer and a waterproofing membrane. This circular examines the waterproofing effectiveness of the paving fabric interlayer system. A compilation of studies that collectively verify and quantify the effectiveness of waterproofing is presented in the circular. The studies cited provide useful information on the use of paving fabrics. Results of the moisture barrier system testing from various laboratories are presented, as well as results of field evaluations of the moisture barrier in pavements. Also discussed are the general problem of water in a pavement section, including sources of water and its detrimental effects, and the use of proper pavement drainage, including edgedrains. The objective of this circular is to provide a source of background information for persons who are unfamiliar with the use of geotextiles as moisture barriers in pavements.
