Availability: Transportation Research Board Library 500 Fifth Street, NW Abstract: In October 1998 the Nevada Department of transportation began training nine maintenance crews in its Reno District on anti-icing with Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS). The Department used a "train-the-trainer" design for this effort. This approach involved training nine maintenance personnel as instructors in anti-icing with RWIS. These instructors then carried out hands-on training in field locations. By using maintenance personnel as instructors our goal was to normalize this new technology for winter maintenance practices in the 1998-99 winter season. This paper outlines our performance and training plan for anti-icing with RWIS. It documents how we designed, delivered, and evaluated our train-the-trainer approach for anti-icing. Model lesson plans, training evaluation tools, and recommended training practices are discussed and reviewed.
