Abstract:

In May 1997, U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Rodney E. Slater created the Garrett A. Morgan Technology and Transportation Futures Program. This educational initiative is designed to ensure that today's students are prepared to become the transportation workforce of the 21st century by inspiring a million students to pursue transportation careers and to obtain the necessary knowledge and skills by the end of the year 2000. This article describes the program's four components: Math, Science, and Technology Literacy Challenge (grades K-12); Community College Partnership; Undergraduate and Graduate Opportunities; and Life-Long Learning. Also discussed in this article are the Morgan Education Roundtable, created along with the Morgan Program; the Garrett A. Morgan Technology and Transportation Futures Program Web site; and examples of educational activities undertaken by the modal administrations. Inserts that appear along with this article are: Adoption of Schools in Massena, New York, by D.E. Deuschl; Largest Ship in 1998 Whitbread 'Round the World Race, by A.C. Landsburg; Garrett Augustus Morgan: Inventor and Entrepreneur, by L.M. Mitchell; First Garrett A. Morgan Externship, by M.H. Bradbury; Titanic Training for Kids Big and Small, by J.D. Baugh; and Technology Mentoring Program, by P. Klinger.
