Abstract:

A Data Warehouse (DW) is considered to be a place to put all of one's data; a Geographic Information System (GIS) is commonly considered to be "a map making or spatial analysis tool". The goal of this paper is to provide a practical overview of these two unique technologies and their integration within the transportation arena. The view presented is of DW and GIS as processes, rather than mere technologies. The integration of DW and GIS is seen as vital to many DOT system integration efforts. Thus, this paper gives a practical viewpoint of spatial DW from the perspective of the transportation agency. First the paper discusses the ways in which an agency can immediately benefit from implementing a GIS-based DW. Second, the paper describes what is required to successfully implement a GIS DW, from the financial, technical and organizational perspectives. Finally, the long-term practical benefits and the ways in which GIS DW will further facilitate agency integration is discussed.
