Abstract:

This article briefly describes the California Department of Transportation's seismic retrofit program. Developments and advances in earthquake engineering and seismic design of bridges was prompted by seismic events, including the 1971 San Fernando earthquake, the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, and the 1994 Northridge earthquake. The seismic design and retrofit concepts that have been developed are now widely applied outside of California.
