Abstract:

This document presents a catalog of "good practice" recommendations for design features of highway pavements for highway engineers, administrators, and others in an easy to use format. The design catalog is organized into the following sections: (1) An introduction to the catalog; (2) How to use the catalog and design criteria; (3) Project site condition inputs (climate, traffic, and subgrade); (4) Guidelines on recommended design features for alternative pavement structures that will meet the minimum performance requirements of the site condition cell; and (5) Special subsurface conditions. A glossary is provided giving definitions of terms used in the catalog. Appendices A through G appear in a separate report on the CD-ROM. Appendix H, the prototype knowledge-based expert system, also appears as a separate product on the CD-ROM.
