Abstract:

CAPCAL2, a new version of the Swedish software for the estimation of capacity, delay, and VOC in intersections, was introduced in 1996. CAPCAL2 can handle roundabouts, as well as intersections both with and without traffic signals. The calculation procedure for both roundabouts and for intersections without traffic signals is based on gap acceptance. The calculation procedures consist of seven steps: estimation of major flow; estimation of critical gaps and follow-up times; calculation of service times; correction for secondary conflicts (not in the roudabouts); allocation of traffic flow to different entry lanes; estimation of the effects of lanes with limited storage; and, calculation of performance measures, including vehicle costs, emission costs, and delay costs.
