This already has affected trade and transportation links within North America and between North America and other regions of the world. In this global environment, transportation is becoming an increasingly important factor in commercial success. Manufacturers increasingly are seeking global sourcing. Intermediary products and services are ordered from different sites from around the world, based on a desired combination of price and quality. A nearby source is now competing with those from afar. Efficient transportation and logistics services are critical variables that can make or break the success of such arrangements. In the coming years developments in transportation and logistics services will continue to change traditional distribution systems to fit new trading patterns that meet shippers' needs. The time will come, in the not-too-distant future, when some of today's critical intermodal freight corridors within North America will establish the path for an integrated continental transportation system capable of serving Canada, the United States, and Mexico. From a port perspective, we find that we are facing a new and ever-more challenging competitive environment.
