Abstract:

This Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis (IDEA) project explored the applications of infrared lightwaves in Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) communication and automated vehicle control. Two IDEA products emerge from this work: a communication system between the traffic operations center (TOC) and vehicles on its highways, and an automated highway system (AHS) in which a vehicle can control its position within a lane and relative to other vehicles without driver assistance. For the communication system, on the highway side is a system of infrared lightwave transmitting-receiving terminals (HWT) which are linked via commercial telephone lines and/or computer communication networks to the TOC. On the vehicle side is the vehicle terminal (VT) with a directed and focusing laser (DAFL). The proposed AHS includes semi-spherical infrared reflecting objects implanted on the lane lines.
