Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: This article describes the St. George Super Port of Entry. The St. George, Utah, port was opened on February 28, 1992, and is located less than 2 km (1 mile) north of the Utah-Arizona border. Utah manages the northbound facility and Arizona the southbound, with uniformed officers from both states working side by side, sharing the same computers and data base. The operational costs are divided equally between Arizona and Utah. The port includes two identical buildings at a 45-deg angle from the highway, allowing maximum visibility of the secured parking area at each site. From their vantage point inside the port, agents can see the entire length of the approach ramp and can visually inspect each passing vehicle. Intelligent transportation system (ITS) technologies such as weigh-in-motion scales, automatic vehicle identification (AVI), and variable message signs enable trucks to pass through the port quickly. A number of safety features are incorporated in the port's design and operation, including a hazardous materials containment area on the outskirts of the secured parking area, the authority to issue misdemeanor and infraction citations and order vehicles out of service, and alcohol and drug testing by port personnel.
