Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: On October 18-20, 1993, the Transportation Research Board (TRB) and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) cosponsored a second workshop on safety research related to high-speed rail and maglev passenger systems. This workshop, at Nordic Hills, Illinois, highlighted the progress made since the first workshop in April 1991 (TR Circular 387). The workshop format provided an opportunity for participants to critique completed and ongoing research, to identify gaps in the research, and to suggest priorities for future research efforts. Workshop discussion groups focused on the following topics: generic high-speed guided ground transportation safety issues; electromagnetic field effects; power and braking systems; control systems; and structural and mechanical systems. Each of these topics is covered in a section of this circular. References to published reports on completed research and project information on in-progress research are provided. The content of this report reflects no attempt to prioritize or further refine the output of each workshop discussion group. The research problem statements have been as far as possible transferred directly from the notes of the workshop session topic leaders and participants. Appendix A provides a list of research problem statements from the 1991 workshop. Appendix B contains a list of all workshop participants.
